The new Amlogic S802 SoC generation is here and we got a Beelink M8. So we are going to check its specifications and performance. This media player is ready to play 4K videos, probably one of the first ones available. Also its conectivity and a strong hardware are good points.
The Beelink M8 is a round box, with a red/blue light on the front and all kind of connectors on its back. Its design is beautiful, really. Black and red was the choosen colors for this “box” (but we can see it’s not a box exactly). M8 top face looks like a “vinyl disc”, I think that can not be appreciated just looking at the pictures, the real one is better.
We can find all that we need from the Beelink M8, latest SoC with powerful CPU and GPU, all kind of connections and robust box. We must start talking about its SoC:
SoC: Amlogic S802
- CPU: Cortex A9 Quad Core up to 2.0 Ghz
- GPU: Mali-450 Octa core 600 Mhz
This is a powerful SoC, ready to play 4K videos, HDMI and SPDIF passthrough allowed. But not only a good System-on-a-Chip is important, so take a look on the other hardware:
RAM: 2GB DDR3
Storage: 8GB or 16GB eMMC
It must be enough as well as the Beelink is expandable by TF card up to 32GB. Also we must pay attention around the WiFi options, the M8 with 8GB version mounts a Broadcom AP6210 WiFi 2.4G b/g/n + Bluetooth 4.0 while the M8 with 16GB mounts a Broadcom AP6330 dual WiFi 2.4G & 5G a/b/g/n + Bluetooth 4.0.
Talking about connectivity, we find said WiFi and Bluetooth and also a RJ45 port for LAN connection.
On its back, the M8 has 2 standard USB and 1 micro USB with OTG ports, HDMI type A, SPDIF (optical audio) and AV jack (included AV cable in the box). Also the TF card memory slot and the power connector as well as a power on button.
The OS is Android 4.4.2 KitKat, but its launcher was made by Beelink, a little Win8 style, APPs can be downloaded and installed without any problem, so we can see that this launcher was thought for a madia player device, it’s good if you want big and simple menus. For those who prefer the native Android launcher, we are sure some extraofficial ROMs will be made soon.
We think the Amlogic S802 can bring us a lot of power, so this is also good if you plan play games, not just emulators but lots of Android games, maybe the Beelink M8 with an Amlogic core is more “Madia Player” than the ZERO Devices Z6C what will be more “all in one”, well, this is the history between Amlogic and Rockchip, but still must wait the official Z6C launch to know more about how to play video.
We ran AnTuTu Benchmark 4.0 on it and the result was around 30000 points what is really good, but you know, benchmarks are just a little help, nothing like the real user experience. As always, we ran AnTuTu more than one time and got different results. Probably the best way is run it 2-3 minutes after power on the unit.
Videos was smooth when we played 1080p and its sound did not give us any problem. We tested Dolby AC3 5.1 and DTS 5.1 in a double test, HDMI and SPDIF passthrought, both without problems. Just doubt about Dolby true-HD what we could not test, hope will do it soon.
IN THE BOX
There are enough things in the Beelink M8 to just open its box, plug&play. We found, of course, the Beelink M8 – Amlogic S802 powered, AC power adapter, HDMI cable, AV cable, mcro USB to USB cable, IR remote control and english/chinese manual inside. We don’t need more than our TV and time to enjoy.
